Every week, deserving young Indian athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement.
It's hard to name anyone in Indian swimming in quite as hot form as Shivangi Sharma. The 17-year-old Delhi girl, representing Assam this time, proved to be a force on the pool as she made splash with record seven medals including 5 gold to emerge one of the most successful individual athlete in the recently concluded Khelo India Youth Games 2020,
Going into Guhawati, she knew that she was prepared. Shivangi thought, “It’s time to go and show off a little bit.”
She sure did.
Amid Karnataka's dominance in swimming, going eight-for-eight made her a big deal. But the 17-year-old certainly raised her profile as a force to reckon with in the recently concluded Khelo India Youth Games 2020.
Shivangi owned the pool, won the 50m freestyle titles in a time of 27.43 seconds in addition to the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle gold medals.
She was one of the favourite to win the 100mts Freestyle event’s gold and she performed as per the expectation. From the very beginning, she took lead and maintained it until the end. The swimmer took 59.26 sec to complete the event.
The 17-year-old swam a blistering 15-second margin ahead of her opponents in the 200m Freestlye race.
Shivangi, who is a student of the Bal Bharti School in New Delhi, decided to compete for Assam in this edition of the Games helped the hosts rise to the sixth place on the medals table ahead of formidable teams from Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Returning to the pool to face the same rivals, her victory in the 800m freestyle event was a foregone conclusion.
The Delhi native swimmer has also added the silver medals in the team event to her repertoire. Shivangi has the gift of length for freestyle, and is working in the weight room to increase her strength.
“Time is flying,” She said. “2019 (Khelo India 2019, Pune) feels like yesterday and 2020 is coming upon us so quickly. And the Olympics is right around the corner. It’s so crazy how fast time flies.”
And she’s been doing some flying herself.
