Social media was flooded with reactions after Six-time world champion M C Mary Kom's pursuit of a second Olympic medal ended in the pre-quarterfinals of the Tokyo Games as she went down to 2016 edition's bronze-medallist Ingrit Valencia in a fiercely-fought showdown.
The 38-year-old legend, who is a multiple-time Asian champion and a bronze-winner from the 2012 London olympics, lost 2-3 to the Colombian, giving it her all in what would now be her final Olympic bout.
Mary Kom had tears in her eyes and a wide smile on her face when the referee raised Valencia's hand at the end of the bout, exhausted after the intense clash.
While the news has made Indians sad, there is no bitterness amid citizens. Social media is witnessing an outpour of love and support for Mary Kom within citizens appreciating her for performance and determination.
Here are some of the reactions:
Thought it before, saying it again, winner in a sport should not be decided subjectively & 5 judges in Boxing exacerbates subjectivity. I know it's not even close to an easy problem to solve, but the sport needs to get it sorted, & fast. (Not just wrt to Mary Kom's bout)#boxing

What a bittersweet moment. Mary Kom loses 3-2 to Ingrit Valencia of Colombia. I first thought Mary misheard the verdict when she raised her hand. Only she knows how tough making the Olympics for one final dance, as a 38 year old mom of 4 was. Truly the grand dame of Indian boxing
