The struggle stories of the sports stars are as fancied as the sports stars themselves are and biopics demonstrating the struggle they underwent and barriers they leaped over to rise to great heights has been a huge hit lately.
A sport is inspiring and so are its aspirers due to the quality that moulds them into one. The inspiring tales scripted over grit, determination and sheer passion has effortlessly crept its way into the hearts of the audience and has indubitably proven to be a source of inspiration. These movies also zoom in and unveil many unknown happenings in the lives of the stars who have been accredited with demi-god statuses.
There has been many such movies that has been relished lately and here’s a list of the biopics that the year may bring.
SAINA
As the name goes by, Saina is the Biopic of the Badminton star who shut open the book of records with her racket. The upcoming of the movie depicting the life story of the Former No.1 was declared on April 2017. The movie directed by Amole Gupta and produced by T-Series had even started to film starring Shraddha Kapoor in 2018 when she dropped out of the movie owing to her clashing schedules. Later in 2019, Parineeti Chopra was confirmed as the protagonist. The film paying tribute to the legend is the most awaited movie expected to be hitting on the screens this year.
‘83
Ever since the news about the making of the movie was dispatched, it has caught the attention and has earned the eager of the country. The plot of the movie revolves around India’s odyssey to the historic World Cup win in 1983, from the eyes of the skipper Kapil Dev. The stardom Ranveer Singh’s sign up for the lead role Kapil Dev, has added the icing to the cake. Deepika Padukone being one of the five producers, the movie is directed by Kabir Khan and bankrolled by the Reliance Industries. ‘83 is expected to hit the screens on April 2020.
PULLELA GOPICHAND’S BIOPIC
A biopic on the legendary Badminton player who is also the Chief National Coach of the Indian team was planned in 2017. The movie was decided to be produced by Fox Studios and Abundantia Entertainment starring Sudheer Babu. The Biopic yet to be titled was planned on a multi-lingual release. Sudheer Babu, who is playing Pullela Gopichand in the movie was a former badminton player and he was roped in owing to his aptness for the role. The screening of the movie honoring the legendary has been delayed twice and the movie was decided to be filmed in two parts. The movie is expected to be released this year.
SHABAASH MITHU
Mithali Raj couldn't have received a better birthday gift in all her years, when a biopic narrating her tale was made official on her birthday last December. The fable of the girl from Hyderabad who went on to change the way, women cricket is perceived is the much talked about and the most sought after movie of the year. The movie is starring Tapsee Pannu and this is not the first sports movie for Tapsee, who has played the role of a hockey player in the Soorma. The movie directed by Rahul Dhalokia will be backed by Vaicom 18.
P.V.SINDHU’S BIOPIC
Ruled over by gossips and rumors, the movie about the ace shuttler who recently added a feather to her hat by becoming the first Indian to seize a BWF Championship, has aroused many speculations amidst the public. Sonu Sood, gained the official rights for filming the biopic of the star in 2017 and the movie has been the center of attention for a number of reasons since then. The movie went abuzz when Pullela Gopichand, the National Coach announced his favor of Akshay Kumar playing his role and when P.V.Sindhu cast her votes for Deepika Padukone to be playing her role in the movie. With no final decisions on the cast, made the movie is expected to be going on screens this year.
DHYAN CHAND’S BIOPIC
The movie narrating the life story of the legendary is still on due since it was first announced in 2014 when Ashok Dhyan Chand, the son of Dhyan Chand sold the rights to produce the movie to Pooja Shetty and Aarti Shetty. Later the movie was decided to be produced by Karan Johar and Varun Dhawan and there has been many rumors regarding the names of many who were considered playing the legendary in his biopic. Anyhow, there has been no news regarding the casting of the lead role. In 2017 M.S Dhoni stepped up and got the rights to produce it owing to the difference of opinion amidst the crew members. The delay in the making the fable of the star, is expected to end this year quenching the thirst of an inspiring tale.
ABHINAV BINDRA’S BIOPIC
A biopic on the Olympics medal winner was announced way back in 2017. The Biography directed by Kannan Iyer casted Harshavardhan Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in the lead roles. The Biography which remains untitled is based on the autobiography of Bindra -“ A Shot at History: My obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold and Beyond”. There has been no updates regarding the movie that was announced and it has been delayed over a period of two years. Harshavardhan Kapoor, the lead actor has explained the scriptwriters difficulty in molding a story where there are not much struggles when compared to other Biopics.
P.T.USHA’s BIOPIC
A biopic on the lifestory of the Golden Girl, P.T Usha was announced in 2016 by Revathi S Verma. The Mary Kom star Priyanka Chopra, was called up to play the role of P.T.Usha initially and then Katrina Kiaf was pulled in for the role of P.T.Usha. The movie is planned to depict the life of P.T.Usha in three stages, her childhood, athletic career and her parenting life. The tribute to the legendary is one of the most expected movies this year.
